18.12.2013 [Management of ICT, End-to-End Infrastructures] Nokia Solutions and Networks Hellas (NSN) and the Department of Digital Systems (through the memorandum of understanding signed by NSN and University of Piraeus Research Center, after the respective initiative driven by the Department of Digital Systems and Prof. P. Demestichas, Head of the Department) will intensify their collaboration in the context of novel scientific and technological areas. Particular focus will be placed on aspects related to software design, development, validation and testing. The collaboration will be realised through regular meetings, co-organisation of events (such as information-days, seminars, lectures, conferences, etc) and in general through exchanging expertise in the areas of LTE Advanced; 5G Technology; Self-Organizing Networks; Cognitive/ Autonomic Networks; Pervasive Networks; Cloud; Software Defined Networking – Network Function Virtualization; Big Data, data analytics, machine learning.
09-13.12.2013 [Management of ICT, End-to-End Infrastructures] Presentation of mechanisms for knowledge generation from big data, related to telecommunication infrastructures, in Globecom 2013. Aimilia Bantouna, senior researcher of the laboratory gave a presentation in the Workshop on "Management of Emerging Networks and Services". The event took place in Atlanta, USA and the presentation was titled Knowledge Functional Block for E-UTRAN". The presentation was directly influenced by the work and discussions that took place in the context of UniverSelf, in order to build a novel Unified Management Framework (UMF) that consolidates autonomic methods of the future Internet for business-driven, service and network management. The Knowledge Functional Block is one of the main components of UMF and it refers to the specifications of the storage, management and analysis of Big Data for telecommunication operators so as to build knowledge and gain insights of the future behavior of the network.

The meeting was hosted in Orange Labs premises, in Issy Les Moulineaux, Paris, France. The purpose of the meeting was to present and discuss/evaluate the demo for the upcoming Orange Labs Research Exhibition (OLRE) to Mr. Nicolas Demassieux, Director/VP of Research and Strategy and others. [Management of ICT Infrastructures] Kostas Tsagkaris and George Poulios participated in demonstration activities during the Bell Labs Open Days in Paris, France. Bell Labs Open Days is a significant event which gathers key players of the telecommunications industry and participation to the event is subject to review by experienced memebrs of Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs. The demonstration was about "Conflict-free coordination of SON functions". A short description of the demo is provided in the following abstract: "Unsupervised operation of numerous Self Organizing Network (SON) functions can lead to chaos, creating severe instabilities and drops in performance. In our Coordinated Mobile Networks test-bed, we mitigate this risk with a twofold innovation based first on the autonomic detection of conflicts while deploying SON functions and second on powerful coordination mechanisms allowing each of the SONs to seamlessly reach its objective, hence and maximizing the overall network performances."
