PiraeusU-Node


The XIFI PiraeusU Node, which is located in the Laboratory of Telecommunication Networks and integrated Services (TNS) of the Department of Digital Systems of the University of Piraeus, is a member of XIFI infrastructure federation (https://www.fi-xifi.eu/home.html) that comprises 18 nodes. The PiraeusU Node has been certified by XIFI as having achieved a GOLD standard Federated Infrastructure Node.

XIFI infrastructure federation enables large trial deployments and can serve the various needs of a broad set of Future Internet users and experimenters. The interconnection of XIFI PiraeusU Node with the infrastructure federation is supported by the the Greek Research and Technology Network (GRNET S.A. www.grnet.gr). The PiraeusU node is accessible through the FIWARE cloud portal at https://cloud.lab.fiware.org/, as well as publicly monitored by the XiFi monitoring infrastructure in the Infographics (http://infographic.lab.fi-ware.org/) and node status (http://status.lab.fi-ware.org/) web-pages.

The XiFi PiraeusU Node architecture consists of three different segments:

  • The Core Network and Servers (CNS)
  • The 4G/B4G – Wireless Broadband Network (WBN)
  • The Wireless Sensor/Actuator Network (WSN/WSAN).

The CNS segment includes the computing, storage and networking devices (resources) as well as, the backbone, teeing together all the network elements. XIFI PiraeusU Node is currently deploying 6 physical servers with 112 CPU cores in total, 224GB of RAM and 4TB of storage. One (1) server is used as a Controller Node, four (4) as Compute and Cinder Nodes and one (1) as Monitoring Node.

The 4G/B4G WBN allows for advanced wireless experimentations based on a plethora of Radio Access Technologies (RATs) including among others cellular UMTS/HSDPA/LTE as well as the IEEE 802.11 suite of standards.

The WSN/WSAN (i.e. the IoT infrastructure) includes a wide range of heterogeneous sensing devices that allow monitoring of both the indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. The IoT infrastructure comprises around 10 ZigBee-compliant nodes with XBee module, 6 Arduino gateways, 5 Waspmote gateways, 2 Cubieboard and numerous sensors for retrieving temperature, humidity, luminocity etc. Further to that, the infrastructure has been designed, developed and configured in a way so as to enable its future extension by adding new sensing devices/integrated platforms from the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), such as traffic management sensors.

PiraeusU Cloudified Experimental Infrastructures

PiraeusU Node includes 2 different experimentation infrastructures: a) IoT Infrastructure and b) SDN Infrastructure. Each infrastructure includes a set of different devices that offer various capabilities, such as the provision of measurements of environmental conditions in Smart Buildings. The installation of the devices for both infrastructures, has been performed in the TNS Laboratory headquarters, with the different devices to be installed in the Smart Building of the Laboratory.

News: On 30th March 2015, UPRC/TNS lab organized a XIFI-related event titled "eXperimental Infrastructures for the Future Internet (XIFI) - Telecommunication Networks and integrated Services (TNS) Node in Piraeus". The event took place in the premises of the University of Piraeus (80, Karaoli and Dimitriou Street, Piraeus, Greece).
